Mars comet closest ever to Earth

Posted by Earth Network on Earth Network Site on 11/05/2014

Discovered in January 2013, the comet will fly just 87,000 miles from Mars on Sunday - less than half the distance between Earth and the moon.

It will be 10 times closer to Earth than any other comet in recorded history.

People with binoculars and telescopes in the Southern Hemisphere are best positioned to witness the event. Siding Spring's closest approach to Mars is expected at 1827 GMT.
